Pronote centralizes communication between parents, students, and educational teams within a school establishment. Sending a document on Pronote, whether it’s an attachment in the messaging system or a file uploaded in the homework diary, relies on a few precise manipulations that vary depending on the device used (computer or mobile application).
Accessing Pronote via the ENT: the often overlooked technical prerequisite
Since the widespread adoption of regional ENTs, connecting to Pronote usually involves a double interface. Depending on the region (Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Occitanie), the access path varies, even though the Pronote software remains the same in the background.

This double layer of authentication creates a recurring problem: the browser blocks pop-ups or tracking, which prevents certain functions from displaying. File uploads and PDF previews are the first affected.
To avoid this blockage, open Pronote in a separate tab after logging into the ENT. Then check that your browser allows pop-ups for your establishment’s domain. A complete tutorial allows you to send a document on Pronote with Web Professor detailing each browser setting to check.

Sending a document via the Pronote messaging system on a computer
The Pronote messaging system functions like an internal mail system within the establishment. It does not allow writing to an external email address: only contacts listed in the establishment’s directory (teachers, staff, parents, students) can be reached.
Writing a message and attaching a file
From the parent or student space on a computer, the procedure follows a precise order:
- Click on the “Communication” tab, then on “Messaging” in the side menu, and select “Compose”.
- In the recipient field, type the name or first name of the teacher. A drop-down list appears: select the correct person.
- Fill in the subject of the message (exercise, absence justification, administrative document) so that the recipient can immediately identify the content.
- Click on the attachment icon (paperclip), choose the file on your computer, and then confirm with “Open”.
- Review the message and click “Send”.
The PDF format remains the most reliable for documents sent via Pronote. Image files (JPEG, PNG) are also acceptable, but a PDF maintains the layout regardless of the recipient’s device.
Uploading a document in the Pronote homework diary
Uploading a document in the homework diary serves a different purpose than messaging. It is primarily used to submit work requested by a teacher. This function is only available if the teacher has activated the “Submit work” option for the relevant assignment.
Procedure from a computer
Go to the “Homework diary” section, then to “Assignments to complete”. Select the relevant course. If the submission option is activated, a “Submit my work” button appears. Click on it, choose your file, and confirm.
If the button does not appear, the teacher has not opened the submission for this assignment. In this case, messaging remains the only alternative to send the document.
Differences between messaging and the homework diary
Messaging sends a document to a specific person, unrelated to a course. The homework diary links the file to a specific assignment, allowing the teacher to find all submissions from a class in one place. Choosing the right channel avoids lost or unread documents.

Sending a document on Pronote from a smartphone
The majority of parents and students use Pronote from the mobile application. The interface differs significantly from the computer version, and several functions are hidden behind the hamburger menu (≡ icon at the top of the screen).
To attach a file to a message from the smartphone, open the messaging via the menu, write your message, and then tap the attachment icon. The phone will then offer to choose a file from internal storage, Google Drive, or iCloud depending on the operating system.
One point to watch: the 4G connection sometimes limits the size of accepted files. If the sending fails, switch to Wi-Fi before trying again. The mobile application does not always clearly indicate a transfer failure, which can lead to the belief that the document has been sent when it has not.
To submit a copy in the homework diary from the smartphone, go to “Assignments to complete”, select the assignment, and then tap “Submit my work”. The procedure remains similar to the computer version, but the submission icon may be less visible on a small screen.
File formats and limits to know about on Pronote
Pronote accepts common formats: PDF, JPEG, PNG, DOCX, ODT. The PDF format offers the best compatibility. Files that are too large may be silently rejected in some cases.
- Convert your Word or LibreOffice documents to PDF before sending to ensure readability.
- Rename the file explicitly (for example, “homework_math_dupont.pdf”): teachers sometimes receive dozens of files named “untitled.pdf”.
- If you send a photo of handwritten work, check the clarity and framing before attaching the image. Scanning via a dedicated app (Adobe Scan, CamScanner) produces a readable PDF from a photo.
Sending a document on Pronote does not automatically generate a notification for the recipient. The setting of push notifications depends on each user. If in doubt about the successful receipt, a short follow-up message in the Pronote messaging system can confirm that the file has indeed arrived.
